Brief
Design an effective unboxing experience in the context of pharmaceutical products. The project should holistically reimagine instructions for use (IFU) as well as the unboxing experience. The design was made for Eli Lilly & Company’s fast-acting mealtime insulin pen, the Humalog KwikPen®.

Project Description
A series of interactive storybooks designed for newly diagnosed Type 1 diabetic children and their parents. Through the use of storytelling and illustrations, the design transforms the diagnosis process from one that is scary and medical to one that is more comforting and approachable.

The KwikPen's onboarding challenge for children with Type 1 diabetes stems from their fear of unfamiliar needles and injections.
The project started with research into a specific user group, children (6-9 years old) with Type 1 Diabetes. It was revealed that for young children & their families, a significant obstacle lies in the KwikPen’s onboarding process. The sudden need to use insulin pens permanently following a diagnosis often leads to apprehension among children.

Could we make the diagnosis process more comforting through the KwikPen unboxing experience?
Frequently overlooked in the unboxing experience of pharmaceutical products, there lies an opportunity to transform the KwikPen's Instructions-for-Use (IFU) into a tool that educates and informs children about their new Type 1 diabetes diagnosis.

Transforming the diagnosis process from one that is scary and medical to one that is more comforting and approachable, through the use of storytelling and illustrations.
Focusing on comfort & approachability, the design brings back the importance of Instructions for Use (IFU) by cleverly disguising it as a children’s storybook. Given during diagnosis, the modular books share diabetes-related topics to children & their families, one story at a time.
With the goal of familiarising children with the injection process through the use of relatable characters, Elliot the Brave tells the story of Elliot who is scared for his first injection. Ella, a more experienced Kwikpen user, guides him through the process & assures him that an injection is not as scary as he thinks.
Key moments in the KwikPen experience is revealed through the book’s interactivities to enhance memorability.
